Kind of chic to have just wrapped up Sem 2’s volunteer training days! We couldn’t be prouder of this cohort. 🎉
It was such a pleasure meeting you all in person before your volunteer program kicks off next week. We had meet ups in Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane. Over the next three months, this crew will be working in teams to write policy briefs on topics that matter to them, all while meeting stakeholders in their chosen field.

Culture is everything when you’re running a volunteer led organisation.
By the very nature of volunteering, no one has to stay at FORE Good. They can leave any time, for any reason. So our job isn’t just to make the work worthwhile, it’s to make people feel connected to the mission and to each other.
One way we do that is through in person city meetups before each program kicks off. Our two biggest are Melbourne and Sydney.
At our Sydney meetup we tried something new. Rock paper scissors, but if you lost you had to fall in behind the person who beat you and cheer them on. Round after round the line grew until we were down to two final contenders in what can only be described as a Scissors Paper Rock Battle Royale.
Afterwards we talked about what it meant. In not for profit work, you won’t always be excited about every task in front of you. Sometimes you’re doing it for your team, because you know they’d do the same for you. Being loud, being supportive, changing direction when needed, cheering each other on, that’s what gets teams through.
By the end it wasn’t just two people having fun in that circle. It was all of us.
Impact work needs seriousness. It also needs silliness. Without the light heartedness, you can’t stay in the work long enough to see the results. That’s why we play rock paper scissors!

A quick note to say thank you to all those who joined us at our NSW Launch - I can’t believe it was two weeks ago already! It was wonderful to be able to meet so many of you in person.

We wanted to share with you FOREsight (newsletter got it first), our new government relations product. An unFOREgetable night! FORE Good has officially launched in NSW. And the room was full in every sense.

We booked a venue for 80 people. We had over 120 RSVPs. Six weeks of reaching out to NGOs, politicians, journalists, and everyone in between led to a night bigger than we planned for, and we would not have had it any other way.

We wanted this launch to feel different to a typical launch event, so we gave the room three jobs for the night: make three new friends, feel confident about coming to FORE, and understand what a PSE is.

We played friend bingo to get strangers talking within minutes. We told everyone about “Day Zero,” the trick we use in our cohorts where people send the hardest email on day one so it is already done by the time the real work starts, then we asked the whole room to do the same thing live, opening the FORE website together and finding a brief on a topic they actually cared about. Then we taught everyone what a PSE is, and got them workshopping their own in small groups, with our alumni jumping in to share tips along the way.

By the end of the night, every PSE written in that room went up on one wall. Watching them all come together in one place said more about what FORE does than we ever could in a speech.

None of this happens without a lot of people showing up for us long before the night itself. Thank you to our incredible volunteers and PLs, who ran dress rehearsals, wore their FORE t shirts with pride, and made sure every detail was covered before a single guest walked in. Thank you to everyone who RSVP’d, showed up, played bingo, and left as one of FORE’s newest friends. And thank you to the mentors, supporters, and friends of FORE who believed in this launch long before we booked the venue.

In Australia, most workers receive a 12% superannuation guarantee from their employer. But superannuation is not guaranteed for gig workers. While they can contribute to their own super, irregular income and complex systems mean 1 in 4 do.

In Australia, most workers receive a 12% superannuation guarantee from their employer. But superannuation is not guaranteed for gig workers. While they can contribute to their own super, irregular income and complex systems mean 1 in 4 do.

Australian Superannuation organisations have explained that this can result in lower retirement savings, greater future financial insecurity. And it hits women, low-income workers and marginalised communities hardest.

In Victoria, it’s illegal to 3D print a gun without a licence 🔫, but downloading the blueprint is technically still legal💻.
We are here to report 📝 on proposed policy solutions- So why have advocates and experts said blueprints matter?
3D printed guns have no serial number or paper trail and are practically untraceable. A single blueprint can also be used to print copy after copy at almost no cost.
Yet under Victorian law, no offence is committed until someone prints the gun, after which, it’s almost impossible to trace back to them.

When these aids are damaged, the consequences can be life-changing. Disability advocates have shared stories of broken wheelchairs, days spent housebound, missed work and appointments, and thousands of dollars in repair costs.
Yet under the law, disability aids aren’t always recognised as distinct from baggage. Disability organisations argue that a simple change in wording could make a big difference.

Just wrapped up our first onboarding day for the new Winter cohort! 60+ people joined us online, with more catching up later and others continuing on from the last cohort.

It always amazes me the calibre of people this role attracts. Passionate, warm, intelligent people who care about making our world and democracy better!
