Kind of chic to have just wrapped up Sem 2’s volunteer training days! We couldn’t be prouder of this cohort. 🎉
It was such a pleasure meeting you all in person before your volunteer program kicks off next week. We had meet ups in Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane. Over the next three months, this crew will be working in teams to write policy briefs on topics that matter to them, all while meeting stakeholders in their chosen field.
We are so excited for what’s ahead and can’t wait to get to know each of you better throughout the program.

Culture is everything when you’re running a volunteer led organisation.
By the very nature of volunteering, no one has to stay at FORE Good. They can leave any time, for any reason. So our job isn’t just to make the work worthwhile, it’s to make people feel connected to the mission and to each other.
One way we do that is through in person city meetups before each program kicks off. Our two biggest are Melbourne and Sydney.
At our Sydney meetup we tried something new. Rock paper scissors, but if you lost you had to fall in behind the person who beat you and cheer them on. Round after round the line grew until we were down to two final contenders in what can only be described as a Scissors Paper Rock Battle Royale.
Afterwards we talked about what it meant. In not for profit work, you won’t always be excited about every task in front of you. Sometimes you’re doing it for your team, because you know they’d do the same for you. Being loud, being supportive, changing direction when needed, cheering each other on, that’s what gets teams through.
By the end it wasn’t just two people having fun in that circle. It was all of us.
Impact work needs seriousness. It also needs silliness. Without the light heartedness, you can’t stay in the work long enough to see the results. That’s why we play rock paper scissors!

In Australia, most workers receive a 12% superannuation guarantee from their employer. But superannuation is not guaranteed for gig workers. While they can contribute to their own super, irregular income and complex systems mean 1 in 4 do.

Australian Superannuation organisations have explained that this can result in lower retirement savings, greater future financial insecurity. And it hits women, low-income workers and marginalised communities hardest.

Update! This change has passed parliament.

In Victoria, it’s illegal to 3D print a gun without a licence 🔫, but downloading the blueprint is technically still legal💻.
We are here to report 📝 on proposed policy solutions- So why have advocates and experts said blueprints matter?
3D printed guns have no serial number or paper trail and are practically untraceable. A single blueprint can also be used to print copy after copy at almost no cost.
Yet under Victorian law, no offence is committed until someone prints the gun, after which, it’s almost impossible to trace back to them.
Legal experts and gun safety advocates have argued that criminalising possession of the blueprint itself, like what has been done in Canada, NSW and SA, could close this gap.

In Australia, wheelchairs and other disability aids can be treated the same as regular luggage on flights ✈️ , despite being fragile, expensive, and essential to the daily independence of more than 3 million Australians.
When these aids are damaged, the consequences can be life-changing. Disability advocates have shared stories of broken wheelchairs, days spent housebound, missed work and appointments, and thousands of dollars in repair costs.
Yet under the law, disability aids aren’t always recognised as distinct from baggage. Disability organisations argue that a simple change in wording could make a big difference.
At FORE Good, we believe politics and policy is FORE everyone.
